Red Top Mountain

Today we hiked around Red Top Mountain state park.. which was formed in 1947 when the army corps of engineers dammed up the Etowah river, creating Lake Allatoona.  The Red Top range is pretty close to the southernmost point of what is considered the Appalachian chain.

This area was first settled by Creek and then Cherokee indian tribes.  In 1830, the town of Etowah was settled and became a minor mining and refining town, drawing from the red iron deposits in the area.  In 1863, General Sherman razed the down as part of his March to the Sea.
What was left of the township was submerged when the dam was completed just after WWII.
